PLANNING A TRIP TO LAKE COMO? HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW 🇮🇹✨

If you really want to explore Lake Como, its famous villas, hidden corners and beautiful villages, you need time.

Four hours is the ideal choice to truly enjoy the lake. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can see all of Lake Como in just one hour — the lake is much bigger than it looks on Instagram!

With a 1-hour cruise departing from Varenna, you’ll mainly explore the central part of the lake. It’s still a beautiful experience — and, as we say, better than nothing — but we recommend booking at least 2 hours.

For the best experience, choose 3 or 4 hours. You’ll have more time to slow down, admire the villas, discover different villages, take photos and experience the real atmosphere of Lake Como without constantly watching the clock.

WHERE SHOULD YOU STAY? 🏡

We recommend staying in Varenna or nearby. Bellano is also a great alternative and is just a short distance away.

Other excellent locations are Bellagio, Menaggio and Tremezzo, especially if you want to stay close to the most iconic part of the lake.

We personally wouldn’t recommend staying in Como city if your main goal is to explore the famous central lake area. It can be busy, and you’ll spend more time travelling to places such as Varenna and Bellagio.

As with every popular tourist destination, especially around busy stations and crowded areas, always keep an eye on your belongings.

COMING FROM MILAN? 🚆🇮🇹

One of the easiest ways to reach Varenna from Milan is by private transfer. Yes, it costs more, but you have comfort, privacy and door-to-door service.

The train is an excellent alternative.

Our tip? Take the direct Milan–Varenna train and leave as early as possible. The earlier you arrive, the more time you’ll have to enjoy the lake.

During high season, trains can become extremely crowded, so always check the timetable before travelling and allow yourself some extra time.

If Varenna is your destination, don’t make the common mistake of taking the train to Como city first. Milano → Varenna is the route we recommend for exploring the central lake.

ONCE YOU ARRIVE IN VARENNA… 🚤

This is where the real Lake Como experience begins.

From Varenna, you can explore the lake aboard one of our luxury wooden boats with a private captain, or enjoy the freedom of one of our self-drive boats, which require no boating licence.

For a first visit, our recommendation is the 3-hour La Dolce Vita Cruise — the perfect introduction to some of the most beautiful scenery, villas and villages of Lake Como.

But if you have the time, book 4 hours.

Lake Como isn’t a place to rush.
